A freshly single empty nester, Kate Silva is on the verge of becoming a social recluse when she turns to the World Wide Web for companionship. Through online deceptions, failed face to face meetings, and schoolmate revelations, she finds that she'll survive life after forty as love is lost and then found on the internet.
When Kate Silva's twenty-year marriage comes to an end, she is certain it would have happened even without her infatuation of a mystery man from England. After Kate announces her divorce, her internet man drops her cold.
With her husband gone, her children off to college, her fortieth birthday looming, and total rejection from someone she had come to depend on for happiness, Kate descends into a black hole of self-pity. Feeling ugly and alone, she becomes almost agoraphobic.
Determined not to get involved in an online relationship again, she nevertheless turns to the internet to quench her social thirst. Born, raised, and stuck in a small town in Central California, she finds her world enlarging by joining various discussion groups.
Then Kate accidentally makes online contact with a childhood friend, and begins to pull herself out of her personal dungeon. Soon she progresses to internet dating sites, and during a year of self-discovery and personal growth, Kate realizes that her life is good, even without a man in it.

INBOX is the story of Kate Redmon, an engaging, delightfully flawed heroine who has a love-hate relationship with her computer, or rather with the world her computer brings to her fingertips. Freshly divorced, empty nesting, and thirty-nine-turning-forty, the high school cheerleader/beauty queen wonders if she's still got it and sets out on a virtual dating quest to find out. Like all true heroines, Kate is aided by her loyal friend Trisha, who dispenses wisdom, Kleenex, and warm lemon bars in times of crisis, and by sexy single friend Barbara who mentors Kate through the twists and pitfalls of negotiating the male dating population while preserving her independence. But when Mr. Right responds to Kate's online dating post, she discovers that independence is the furthest thing from her mind.Kate's story is told with wit, honesty, and a deep vulnerability of character that won my heart from page one. Who couldn't love a heroine who decides against a nutritious dinner by herself in favor of a pan of instant cheesecake that she eats while sitting in front of her computer avidly reading her inbox messages? The author's storytelling skill reveals itself in snappy dialogue, a rich variety of characters, and even-paced narrative that keeps you moving yet lingers over romantic and bittersweet scenes that I found myself rereading a second or third time just for sheer enjoyment. INBOX is not so much a beach read as it is a curl-up-in-your-favorite-chair-with-hot-cocoa treat. I can't wait for the author to adapt the novel for the screen so I can invite over some girlfriends to laugh and cry with me over Kate's antics and share a big bowl of buttered popcorn.

INBOX eBook Joy McGuire Reviews
Plot/Storyline 3 3/4 Stars
This was an intiguing novel of modern romance, electronic-style. The author did a great job of not letting it decline into a recitation of e-mail and chat correspondence. There were some e-mails, but they were not prevalent. I was rather surprised that no one in the book suggested `live chat,' such as Yahoo Messenger, as that's a common way to communicate when you don't want to give out your phone number or other information.
The `plot,' what little there was of it, was very weak. Kate Silva, the main character, seemed to be solely focused on romance. By that, I mean that other aspects of her life were rather mundane and touched only on the surface. There was just no conflict or real plot to hold interest. Perhaps a more interesting occupation would have given the storyline a kick. A stay-at-home typist just doesn't have a whole lot to talk about when it comes to careers.
The storyline also had some weak points when it came to "Time". There was one point in the novel when I had to try and figure out how much time had passed. The other problem was when there was a jump forward in time, with accompanying flashbacks to fill in what had happened in the interim. That was just confusing and irritating to read through, making me feel lost and as if I had missed something.
I loved the tales of internet dating, though. The author has either tried it herself or talked to women who have been through it. The scenes were hilarious and spot on, making this novel well worth the time to read.
Character Development 3 Stars
Kate was a very weak character. She was developed, for the type of personality she had. She was needy, dependent, and `man-hungry.' While that didn't make her unbelievable, as a woman coming out of an almost twenty year marriage, it did make her rather boring and unlikable at times.
Kate's friends were far more fun to read about. Unfortunately, they didn't get a lot of screen time for themselves. They were just props for Kate, for the most part.
Kate's dates were interesting, but I can't talk about them too much so as not to give away any secrets. I will just add that one of them acted a little too far out of character at the end, playing off of Kate's dependency and neediness.
Writing Style 5 Stars
The writing style was excellent with terrific sentence structuring for a nice, even flow to the read. The descriptions were terrific. The dialogue could have been a movie script; it was so realistic.
Editing 4 1/2 Stars
There were a few editing errors, mostly punctuation issues.
Rating PG-14 for Adult Situations and Sexual References
I enjoyed every moment. The characters are real and kept me engrossed in the story. Once I got into the book I couldn't put it down. I want to read more by this author.
Kate Silva announces that she is divorcing her husband through group e-mail. In suspense she awaits...and awaits...a response from her online flirtation.
I was immediately drawn in. The writing is excellent. Actually the writing is better than excellent, it stands out. I'd put this book on the same chick lit level as a novel by Emily Griffin. I am only partway through but really enjoying the read.
